December 16, 1989 . Protests erupt in the streets of Timisoara in Romania against food shortages and the dictatorship of Nicholai Ceausescu. The uprising ends with the communist dictator to be executed a week later. After the storm, Western journalists were invited to contemplate the ‘deeds’ of the regime. Dozens of mass graves in Timisoara were emptied for the identification of bodies. In one, the photographer Robert Mass captured the infinite sorrow of a man.
